Under the current ICAO ACR–PCR methodology, the Aircraft Classification Rating (ACR) represents the relative effect of an aircraft on a pavement, while the Pavement Classification Rating (PCR) reports the pavement’s bearing strength. Reliable pavement data is therefore essential when establishing or updating a PCR, evaluating a proposed aircraft operation or planning future maintenance.

HWD Testing Under Aircraft-Representative Loads

A Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD) applies a controlled dynamic load that represents aircraft wheel loading. Sensors measure the resulting deflection basin at the pavement surface. These measurements can be used to evaluate load-carrying capacity, backcalculate pavement-layer stiffness and assess the response of the subgrade without damaging the pavement.

QRoad tests both flexible and rigid airport pavements. On concrete pavements, HWD measurements can also assess slab support and joint load-transfer efficiency. The results help identify structurally weak areas and support estimates of remaining structural life.

Combining HWD and GPR Pavement Data

HWD results become more valuable when interpreted together with accurate pavement-construction information. QRoad can combine HWD measurements with vehicle-mounted Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys. GPR provides continuous information about pavement-layer thickness, changes in construction and subsurface anomalies across large pavement areas.

Together, HWD and GPR provide a stronger basis for evaluating pavement performance than isolated investigation points alone. The combined results help airport engineers relate structural response to pavement construction, divide the pavement into consistent sections and focus follow-up investigation or rehabilitation where it is most valuable.

An airport pavement assessment is particularly valuable when updating a PCR, considering a new or heavier aircraft type, preparing a rehabilitation programme, investigating unexpected pavement distress or establishing baseline data after construction. Surveys can be planned around operational constraints and available closure windows.
