GPR Testing at Traffic Speed

Our Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) provides continuous, non-destructive pavement testing at traffic speed. We measure pavement layer thicknesses and detect subsurface anomalies such as voids and delamination in asphalt and concrete pavements, giving you fast insight into the pavement structure with minimal disruption to traffic or airport operations.

While GPR shows layer thickness variations and anomalies, FWD testing determines the bearing capacity and structural condition of the pavement. Together, these methods provide a clear overall picture and valuable input for maintenance planning, rehabilitation design and pavement management.

Our easily transportable GPR system allows us to mobilize quickly and carry out pavement assessments worldwide.

How GPR Testing Works

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a non-destructive testing method used to evaluate pavement structures and subsurface conditions. With GPR testing, we continuously measure pavement layer thicknesses, thickness variations and structural anomalies such as delamination, voids and settlements at normal traffic speed.

Our GPR system is specifically designed for pavement evaluation and enables safe, efficient data collection at normal traffic speed, with minimal disruption to traffic or airport operations. During the survey, our team monitors the data in real time to ensure high data quality. The collected data is processed using advanced software and translated into clear, practical reports that support pavement assessment and maintenance planning.

For a more complete pavement assessment, GPR can be combined with Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing, linking pavement structure and layer thicknesses to bearing capacity and long-term maintenance needs.

GPR Testing Method

QRoad uses IDS GeoRadar equipment for continuous GPR testing of road and airport pavements at normal traffic speed. The 2 GHz antenna is used to evaluate pavement layer thicknesses, thickness variations and anomalies within the pavement structure. The 900 MHz and 400 MHz antennas are used for deeper subsurface evaluation, helping to identify anomalies such as subgrade migration and settlements.

The collected data is monitored in real time, processed with advanced software and translated into clear reports for pavement assessment, maintenance planning and rehabilitation design.
