HWD testing at Muscat International Airport
QRoad carried out a comprehensive structural pavement evaluation at Muscat International Airport in Oman. The investigation covered Runway 08R/26L, the associated Delta and Echo taxiways, and selected rigid pavement areas.
Using a Dynatest Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD), QRoad measured the structural response of the pavements under loads representative of aircraft wheel loading. This non-destructive testing method provided detailed insight into pavement performance and bearing capacity.

The HWD data was analysed to determine the effective stiffness of the pavement layers and subgrade and to evaluate the structural capacity in relation to the airport’s representative aircraft fleet and projected traffic demand. Concrete pavement areas were also assessed for slab support and load-transfer efficiency across the joints.
Pavement Classification Number Assessment
The measurements and structural analysis formed the basis of a Pavement Classification Number (PCN) assessment for the evaluated runway, taxiways and rigid pavement areas. The results provided airport management with a clear and objective understanding of pavement performance and structural capacity across the investigated areas.

The project was completed using the PCN method applicable at the time. Since 28 November 2024, ICAO has replaced the ACN–PCN system with the ACR–PCR system for reporting airport pavement bearing strength.
For airport pavement managers, HWD testing provides valuable information for aircraft compatibility, maintenance planning, rehabilitation strategies and long-term pavement asset management.
